This is going to get real uncomfortable. ⁣ ⁣ I This is going to get real uncomfortable. ⁣ ⁣ I am hesitant to write about this topic because I know how this ends before I even post it. Given the private conversations I’ve had over the past few days... I feel compelled to breach the topic. ⁣ ⁣ Shaming people for the color of skin they were born with is not going to advance any movement. This only makes white folks shrink, ignore, put on a fake show or avoid the movement because they are terrified of being called racist. By avoiding it... they remain “safe.” ⁣ ⁣ I’m no social expert here... but I’m pretty sure this isn’t what our minority communities want or need. ⁣ ⁣ On the other side of this white people are attacking white people for not doing enough. I understand the reasoning of this but I can’t help but see how ineffective this tactic is. I’ve heard at least two instances (dramatic or not) of white people saying they should hold their head in shame for being white everyday... or throw themselves off a bridge. ⁣ ⁣ Is that what our minority friends want? I don’t think that for a moment. ⁣ ⁣ I think we have to stop attacking each other for how we advance minority equalities... especially if they don’t look the same as they way we choose to do it. What’s important is that it is happening and it takes many different tactics to make the movement root. ⁣ ⁣ For some... this means protesting peacefully down the streets of their hometown with their minority friends. ⁣ ⁣ For some... this means they mentor, coach, volunteer where they feel they can do their best work. ⁣ ⁣ For some... this means they lock arms with their business community to bring in more diversity into the business landscape. ⁣ ⁣ For some... they will seek spiritual relationships to make their communities stronger and partner with other local organizations. ⁣ ⁣ For some... they will beef up their non profits efforts to support those of color and offer different levels of help to these communities. ⁣ ⁣ For some... maybe the only thing they feel they can do is have meaningful conversations with their kids so they can teach the best and most loving values to them. ⁣ ⁣ (Continues below)

Please don’t tell me it had to be done... in fact unfollow me if that’s how you feel. I watched tear gas come into my lobby... knowing there were children just stairs away. I watched firecrackers injury innocent people... I heard gunshots all night. All I want to do is leave... and take everything... my business... my money and my opportunities with me. This is heartbreaking. This will cost these businesses millions to recover... my friends businesses are decimated ... the places my neighbors work have been looted... just when they were finally getting back to work. I watched business owners standing in the middle of their businesses wondering what to do. Many of them will shut their doors forever. This is not okay. If you think that makes me tone deaf to what is going on... think it all you want. You aren’t living in this right now. You’re looking at this from the safety of the suburbs and your iPhone. Just walking outside my building I choke on tear gas getting picked up by the wind. I won’t be able to drive down my street for weeks due to all the glass. I lost as to how to feel about it all. Sure... communication can be hard and confronting but the lack of it is detrimental. ⁣ ⁣ When you choose to communicate through behavior rather than through words... you make everyone else have to decide what you mean.
